CRAFTSMAN

" road trip with renowned wood worker, Jory Brigham in pursuit of pioneers in their craft, living against the norm, without compromise

CRAFTSMAN (4-6 minute film)

A film following Jory Brigham, an accomplished and distinguished modern wood worker from the Central Coast of California, as he seeks to find others who are also making sacrifices to do what they believe in. Jory has made a name for himself grabbing the attention of Spike TV, and becoming the winner of the design and build TV show Framework that aired last fall. Check out more of his press accomplishments here: http://www.jorybrigham.com/press/

Knowing this idea was something we wanted to get after, we shot this short trailer:

THE PLAN:

To hit the road with a couple of friends, taking the scenic route in VW Bus meeting up with a local legend that paved the way to the lifestyle of craftsmanship that Jory shares in. As much as this film is about the people we meet, we want to add subtle highlight moments of the trip that let the film breath and to experience the journey.

The cornerstone theme of the film is "mentorship". Jory has been mentored by his old-friend John, not only in the skills, but in how he looks at the world and the people around him. Jory will be touching base with his roots in this trip out to John's oasis located in the middle of the Los Padres National forest. He will be re-discovering what inspired him in his life’s choices to make a way for him and his family through wood working.

At the closing of the film, the theme of mentorship will come full-circle as Jory heads home, re-inspired to pour into his own son Bozley. Capturing the two in the shop will show how Jory continues the journey of passing on the craft.

Meet John Cody. He's been laying pretty low the last 20 years since the Internet came along. Driven by the craft of carving stone and living off the beaten path, John is living the life most people are afraid to live.

He's a direct descendant of William “Buffalo Bill" Cody and somehow still seems connected to those Wild West roots. At the age of 18, he grabbed some land, 166 acres of it, and began building his house. Today, the house and his land are surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest.

He created original works for Michael Jackson, David Crosby, and others. And throughout the years has been a mentor (and legend) to many in the Artisan community, including Jory who, in his early 20’s spent countless weeks and months with John, learning the ways of the craft.

William Cody, "Buffalo Bill", still lives on in John's life as he lives against the grain.

Views on his property don't disappoint. More than the scenery, this view represents a life that values more than stability in a suburban setting, but a life of freedom and desire to build/sculpt.

MUSIC by Drew Barefoot

Drew Barefoot has been writing, recording, and producing his own music for the exclusive uses of CANA for several years. His music sets our work apart in this industry and sets a powerful tone for every film we produce.

With this film, Drew would write and produce 1-2 songs (depending on the editors needs) to work to tell this story with very fine attention the emotion and climaxes throughout the footage. A few benefits to this option:

  • Tracks are exclusive to the film vs a re-used license of a common track.
  • Film flow and style is edited in complementing fashion to work together with the footage.
The music and the film will follow each other with footage and music never experienced by the viewer before.

The story will follow this modern wood worker who, seeking to live a uncommon life, re-connects with his roots, in the form of the legend John Cody, and returns home to teach his own son, and build a life worth living.

In the midst of showing off a diverse mix of crafts, from wood working to sculpting; the heart of the film is to tell the story of why these individuals choose this lifestyle, living apart from the norm, investing in themselves and families in their own craft.
